For an 89-bed long-term care home on the South Shore, Shoreham is making an outsized contribution to long-term care research and clinical practice in Canada.

This past year, Shoreham entered the second year of its IPAC (Infection Prevention and Control) study, continuing to strengthen infection prevention practices and contributing to sector-wide learning.

Shoreham was also selected as the pilot site for Phase 2 of a national surveillance study led by the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program (CNISP), focused on the prevalence, assessment, and treatment of urinary tract infections in long-term care. Additional surveillance sites across Canada have since joined the initiative in both rural and urban settings, including publicly and privately funded long-term care homes, providing a comprehensive cross-section of current practices.

The goals of the study include establishing national benchmarking data, identifying trends and best practices in UTI assessment and treatment, supporting antibiotic stewardship, and enhancing surveillance in long-term care. Findings are now being shared through poster presentations at the National Infection Prevention and Control Conference, and Shoreham continues to participate in the national working group developing future publications. The study is expected to continue through 2027.

Recognition came at the provincial level as well, with Shoreham honoured as Best Supporting Team at the Golden Gauze Awards during the Provincial Wound Care Conference. Staff participated in two days of hands-on learning, exhibits, and collaboration focused on evidence-based wound care practice.

Together, these initiatives reflect Shoreham’s commitment to evidence-informed care and to ensuring residents receive the right care, at the right time, supported by research that benefits the broader sector.
