This past year tested Shoreham’s emergency preparedness in real and meaningful ways, and the response in each case reflected years of training, planning, and community partnership.

On July 5, 2025, smoke detected in the A/B nursing office prompted the evacuation of residents and staff to Our Health Centre. Local fire departments responded quickly and identified the source as a mechanical issue with the rooftop air conditioning unit. Residents and staff returned safely once the all-clear was given.

On October 7, 2025, Shoreham conducted a comprehensive emergency exercise involving Code Red, Code Green, Code Blue, and Code Amber scenarios, in collaboration with the RCMP, EHS, local fire departments, the Regional Emergency Management Organization (REMO), and volunteers from Northwood. Four residents were temporarily transferred to Ivany in Bedford as part of the relocation exercise. The exercise reinforced staff knowledge of protocols, evaluated response times and communication, and identified opportunities for continued improvement.

On the evening of February 3, 2026, a water suppression line burst, flooding E Wing and parts of C and D Wings. Staff responded immediately with help from local fire departments, and First Onsite Property Restoration arrived in the early morning hours to coordinate water removal, drying, and rebuild. Residents were safely relocated within the facility, and care continued without interruption. The final residents returned to E Wing on March 16, 2026.

Across each event, what stood out was the calm professionalism of staff, the strength of relationships with emergency response partners, and the trust families placed in the team. Monthly fire drills, annual staff recall exercises, and ongoing emergency code education continue to keep Shoreham ready for whatever comes next.
